HOSPITAL INJURY REPORTS

These reports are designed to provide interested parties with a basic overview of injuries occurring in their communities and in Wisconsin, in a given year.  Injuries are reported in 25 detailed categories, for four classes of “intention” (unintentional, self-inflicted, assault and other) and by detailed age group.  The five reports in this series are:

Statewide Reports:

Cause of Injury – Number, Charges, Length of Stay and Severity

Underlying Intent for Injury – Number, Charges, Length of Stay and Severity

Intent by Cause of Injury – Number and Percent

Age Group by Cause of Injury – Number

Age Group by Cause of Injury – Percent

Sources of Data

The information on the attached pages comes from Hospital Discharge and Emergency Department data collected by the Bureau of Health Information within the Department of Health and Family Services in Wisconsin.  These data have information related to injury severity added to them (obtained using ICDMAP-90 software, which is based on injury severity scores developed by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine in the 1960s and updated through the present time).  Additionally, E-Codes have been categorized utilizing a scheme developed by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, and published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly in 1997 (for the NCIPC Report, go to:  ftp://ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Publications/mmwr/rr/rr4614.pdf ).  Data is available for single years from 1995 forward.

For detailed information on the categorization of cause of injury, please see this report (Adobe Acrobat is required to read it).

How to Interpret the Data:

·         Cases are for hospital discharges only.

·         Charges are for all hospital charges, including ER charges if relevant

·         The percentages provided in Table 5 are the percent of a cause of injury in a given age group.
